How Much Waketime Does My Baby Need?

Whether you’re dealing with short naps, early morning wakings, or just trying to get your baby on an age appropriate schedule, figuring out an appropriate waketime is really important. The right amount of wake time helps baby hit the right amount of sleep pressure - not overtired or undertired. This leads to great, long naps and sound nighttime sleep.

There is no perfect waketime for every age but, we’ve done our best to help with this chart of waketimes by age. It will help you know about how long your baby should be awake before they need to sleep and when those times start to change. And our secret is to always err on the shorter side if you aren’t sure. It is much easier to extend your baby’s wake time tomorrow than it is to deal with an overtired baby who was up too long. Remember, sleep begets sleep, keeping your baby up will not help them sleep longer!
