Why Will My Baby Only Sleep On Me?

Stuck with a baby sleeping on your chest all the time? What can start out as the sweetest part of your day can often begin to feel like being trapped beneath a 12 lb tyrant. You know that it is so important for your baby to get great sleep, so you sacrifice everything (your productivity, your meals, even your own body) to help them get there. But, there often comes a point when it is just too much and that is OK!! You are a wonderful parent and, as a human, it is normal and healthy for you to want some space to yourself. If you’re reaching that point, Sleep Baby is here to help!

4th trimester baby

For 9 months, your baby grew inside mom and was held and rocked to sleep 24/7. They are used to being warm and snuggled close up to another person so it’s normal that the adjustment to the bright, empty world can take some time! The first three months of your baby’s life (often called the 4th Trimester) can be especially difficult as you both adjust to a new way of living. What frequently happens is, during that time, in our effort to make sure baby doesn’t get overtired (yay!! that’s exactly what you want to do!) we never make the transition to also teaching them to sleep independently. Then we have a 4, 5, 6 month (or older) baby who is looking for a parent to snuggle with each time they are ready to sleep. This can be a wonderful and incredibly sweet time together! We always encourage parents to do what is best for them and their family as long as it’s safe. If you’re feeling stuck with your baby’s current sleep patterns, read on.
