Favorite Things - Swaddles

It’s that time of year! With the holidays coming up, we know that lots of you are making lists for your kids (or yourself if you’re expecting) of baby items for gifts. The Sleep Baby Team is here to help! We have 5 moms on our team who are all professional sleep consultants and ready to show you what baby gear you actually need. Just pretend we’re walking through the baby aisles at Target and this is what we’d tell you to register for.

First up - Swaddles and Sleep Sacks

When a baby is born, they have a reflex called the Moro or Startle Reflex. This is a primitive reflex that kids grow out of but, while they have it, it can make sleep difficult. Swaddles suppress the reflex allowing baby to settle into a good, deep sleep.

What makes a good swaddle? Two things: it’s tight and easy to put on baby. The last thing you want to be doing in the middle of the night is fighting with the swaddle so your baby can get to sleep! These are our tried and tested favorite:

  • The Ollie Swaddle This is hands down, our favorite swaddle. It is easy to use and their unique fabric gets the wrap perfectly tight every time. It also makes transitioning out of the swaddle a breeze. Plus, Hindi, the Ollie creator made this product for her foster son and we love the way they have continued to support other through their company.

  • Muslin swaddle blankets - these are a baby basic and a must have for any newborn. They are large, which makes it easy to do the burrito-type swaddle when you want to and have so many other uses. Tuck one in the stroller with baby to keep them warm, lay it out on the floor for playtime, or use it as an extra large burp cloth when you’ve got a spitter. There are tons of brands, find a pattern you love!

  • SwaddleMe this is a very basic swaddle with one key feature - velcro. The velcro helps you get the swaddle tight! It’s also very reasonably priced.

When your baby is rolling, it’s time to take them out of the swaddle and move on to a sleep sack. This is like a wearable blanket for baby, it keeps them warm and is safe. You can find these everywhere but there is one that we think is the best right now.

  • Kyte Baby Sleep Sack I dare you to find a softer blanket anywhere. It’s amazing. It also comes in different tog weights so you can keep your baby warmer or colder depending on your climate. I like to describe this as the difference between sleeping under a sheet and sleeping under a quilt. It’s cozy and your baby will love it!
